Relating Indigenous Learning Systems with Modern Systems

Different regions have different learning systems. These learning systems are quite often based on the culture of the natives or rather the indigenous people. Thus, in the case a new, or rather a different learning system is introduced, there is usually a conflict that arises. As such, it is imperative that the new and the traditional systems of learning are merged within elements that can bring harmony in learning.
The need to incorporate these two systems of learning is highlighted by the two articles. In the first article, Indigenous Knowledges and the Story of the Bean, the authours, Brayboy and Maughn, highlight the various issues students hold against Western systems implemented in Indigenous teacher preparation programs. For instance, the staff and faculty in this case, were using an approach that was performative rather than relational, which was the way of the indigenous pre-service teachers. The authors use the story of the bean to illustrate their arguments.
In the second article, Complexity Pedagogy and e-Learning: Emergence in Relational Networks, the authors advocate for the need to develop new pedagogies and e-learning platforms for engaging students to encourage innovation that is consistent with the new requirements for education in the 21st century. The authors outline a new teaching-learning platform inspired by complexity pedagogy, which they situate through the story of Daagu, strategically placing e-learning platform within complexity thinking and extant curricular theory. The authors describe the complexity e-learning platform that disrupts traditional e-learning approaches by focusing on patterns of relating, diversity, conversation, reflection, and emergence among groups of learners.
There is a need to improve learning systems for students, but this is only possible by considering the indigenous/traditional learning systems in implementing the necessary changes. The two articles note the importance of appreciating this diversity and try to make their arguments through indigenous stories that reflect just how significant they are.
In my opinion, innovation has been with the human race since the beginning, the only difference is the level of technology. Still, there is so much to learn from the old years’ intellectuals and innovators, such Albert Einstein, Chinua Achebe, and the likes
we came to Kenya in the year 1992, while I was 2years old, we flee from our home country due to political unrest and some other natural catastrophes, life is never easy growing up in refugee camp with limited access to education, opportunity and due to cultural beliefs, girls were never allowed to go to school and use to get less opportunity compere to the boys so when I have completed my high school education I lost hope because no one supported me to join college until 5 years later when I got this opportunity offered by BHer team through York university which really helped me to achieve my dreams and goals.
I completed a BA in faculty of arts and now perusing my master degree through e-learning and really appreciate this project and its very useful to me
Some of the ideas based on the story of the Bean about indigenous knowledge emphasizes the importance of indigenous learning compared to other forms of learning like traditional and western knowledge. Indigenous learning makes individuals be analytic thinkers due the rootless it has, to my idea indigenous people are owners of the land so they are familiar with the environment and climate changes that occurred in their area that is why they said indigenous knowledge is tied to the land and within the reading, Henry was called in order to show teachers ways in which the learning helps their school children to knowledge that relates to their everyday lives. Indigenous people see learning indigenous knowledge in schools will make their children practice their language and culture.

The indigenous knowledge learning system is more practical than theory. As a critically engaged educator, I can certainly see the advantage of taking lessons through practical, particularly the analysis of the bean-plant experiment. With these, learners will be able to gain first- hand knowledge by doing and seeing how changes occur stage by stage and it fully leads learners to gain skills and experience based on the experiment taken. The author made me understand that indigenous knowledge is also handed down in the family-lines from generation to generation (as traditional). Where one of the female teacher-student has shared her experience based on the knowledge of the sky and the patterns of the stars “knowledge comes from experience.” Where she discussed when to plant and what kind of seeds to plant at a specific time by looking at the constellations of the stars.
This is also a concern shared (Chika E, 2019) where she said that indigenous communities are known to have intimate knowledge of their phenomena, much very well than an educated person from the Western world. Her was to mainstream indigenous knowledge in all fields of study and to her evidence was, she carried out an experiment by comparing indigenous knowledge techniques and western knowledge techniques in the field of agriculture and later on she founded that, the one with indigenous system yielded thrice than the with the Western system. Really these reminded me of a story my grandfather used to tell us during our early ages. Our grandfather used to predict the rains by looking at stars. Saying as if certain kinds of stars appear on a certain side of the sky, we will receive rain together winds by telling us together around him by looking at the sky and so on…
